STAFF PICKS

We have been selling motorcycle gear for 14 years now, and one of the questions we keep getting asked is "what do you wear on the bike?" We highly rate all of the items we sell, or we wouldn't have selected them in the first place. But when it comes to our personal preferences, we are fortunate enough to be able to cherry-pick exactly what suits our needs and style.

The next member of staff to make an appearance is Rob, our website manager. When he's not working on our beloved homepage - which you obviously have bookmarked - he's tinkering on his bikes. Luckily our website updates see quicker progress than his bike builds! Rob never shies away from racking up the miles and spends a lot of time on two wheels, so he's the perfect person to tell you what motorcycle gear to shortlist. Have a look or a read.

HEDON HEROINE RACER HELMET

"I literally looked at it and... I had to have it."

Perfection in design, as we've come to expect from Hedon. The finish is absolutely stunning: the leather trim and metal hardware work a treat in combination with the Heroine's sleek shell and colour schemes. The visor pivots around those gorgeous metal side pods and shuts with a satisfying click. Above the viewport, you'll find three simple but effective vents. The liner doesn't just look luxurious, its soft finish and ergonomic make this ECE certified helmet a joy to wear.

MERLIN STOCKTON LEATHER JACKET

“It's so comfortable that I sometimes wear it as a casual jacket.”

Merlin probably needs no introduction. The British brand have been making high quality, protective motorcycle gear at impressive price points for the past few years and they keep upping their game with every new collection. The Stockton is the perfect example of that: this is a sublime leather motorcycle jacket which genuinely gives you a lot of value for money. It is constructed from a beautifully soft aniline leather, something you'll generally only find in way more expensive jackets. The aniline dyeing process means the leather stays soft and supple and any blemishes in the hide aren't simply painted over. Hence only high quality leather can be used, and that is obvious as soon as you get your hands on the Stockton.

This leather is not just soft, it is also highly abrasion resistant. Combine this protective outer layer with some top-notch D3O impact-absorbing armour (shoulders and elbows are included, the back protector is optional), and you've got yourself a proper roadworthy motorcycle jacket, with a CE Level AA safety rating to match.

Merlin's other leather jackets are definitely worth a look too.

RACER HEATED GLOVES

“I needed heated gloves to make my winter commute more pleasant. These have made a massive change.”

Rob's Winter glove of choice is the Racer Forge MKII, a collaborative glove between Racer and Urban Rider which is sadly all sold out for this season. Luckily Racer have a few other amazing heated gloves in their range for you to chose from. The Connectic 5 and Heat 5 are superbly comfortable, escaping the trappings of the unwieldy heated glove market, boasting an impressive heating system and battery life while keeping the overall feel user-friendly. Their aim is to keep you riding through the coldest days without losing feel for the bike’s controls.

KNOX RICHMOND MK3 JEANS

“I wear these during the winter because of the thicker lining... they're just really comfy.”

The third and best iteration of the already wildly popular Knox Richmond jeans. Knox have updated the fit, carefully tailoring a tapered cut that looks great both on and off the bike, and focussed on adding breathability to unlock true year-round use, without losing all the elements that made previous versions so popular.

The outer is still constructed with highly abrasion-resistant Cordura® denim, designed to take a beating, but retain the look of a traditional pair of jeans. Plus, they’ve added some stretch for exceptional comfort and articulation necessary for hopping on your bike. The aramid fibre part-lining does the real leg work, offering supreme abrasion resistance against a slide, while the rest of the liner has been updated, now made from antibacterial soft stretch cotton that promotes breathability, and next-to-skin comfort.

JOHN DOE IRONHEAD JEANS

“I generally just wear these out and about, they are that comfortable.”

John Doe's Ironhead jeans have a stylish slim fit. The outer layer consists of sturdy 10.5oz denim and is fully backed up by John Doe's own XTM® Fibre liner, made out of abrasion-resistant aramid fibres and inner Coolmax® fibres for temperature regulation on the hotter days. These jeans come with CE Level 1 knee and hip armour and the knee armour pocket is adjustable in height for a perfect fit. The denim has a Teflon® coating to make it water repellent. That's a whole lot of functionality for a stylish looking pair of jeans at an attractive price! When first introduced to us, the opinions in the Urban Rider office were unanimous: the look and fit of the Ironhead is spot on and the stretchy nature of the jeans means you'll be extremely comfortable on the bike, whatever riding position you're in.

STYLMARTIN ROCKET BOOTS

“I love these so much I bought them twice.”

Stylmartin paved the way in offering motorcycle boots that were protective and stylish in equal measure. Now finally available in black, the Rocket features a high rise worker boot look offset with the brilliantly useful waterproof zipper on the inside to make getting the boot on and off as straightforward as can be. The boots feature a breathable and waterproof liner for all weather riding.

MONIMOTO SMART MOTORCYCLE ALARM AND TRACKER

“It just works. I've got it on both of my bikes and it gives me peace of mind”

Monimoto is a smart, silent alarm that notifies you through calling and texting your smartphone if your vehicle moves without the Monimoto Key being near the bike. It then tracks your vehicle's location and sends this through to you at regular intervals.

The device is extremely simple to set up, install and use. The Monimoto app (available for iPhone and Android) guides you through the short set-up process and links the Monimoto Key to the actual device. You're then ready to install the alarm on your motorcycle (or other vehicle) which couldn't be easier. Just find a hidden spot on your bike and cable tie the unit in place. No need to tap into your bike's wiring loom or connect anything to the battery, the unit is self-powered with two included batteries that should last over a year on a full charge.
