- Strapped for cash 0 people found this helpfulA handsome product, well made and for a reasonable price in the kind of thick, manly leather that smells better than aftershave and looks more expensive when weathered and introduced to Dr Dubbin. This is the kind of bag for which ‘portmanteau’ is not too strong a word. It may not be waterproof (the cute branded cover is more youth hostel than first class cabin) but the Classic Pannier will easily stop a sniper’s bullet. It’s quite small, (you knew that, didn’t you, when you checked the measurements?) but it’s not as if you are going touring any time soon, plus you can always get another if you need to carry more than one spare plug (just joking), yes a pair. A left and right pair. But blimey the strappage! Too many, too long, too short, too thick, too fiddly… An attempt has clearly been made to provide ‘universal fitting’ and while trial and error eventually produced a solution that worked with the rack, frame and or pannier rails of my Bonnie (and which would allow me to swan off to the cafe at Cadwell toting my bag but leaving the straps in situ) the answer to Trip Machine’s initiative test was not obvious, only achieved by barking a knuckle or two and by punching additional holes in the shortest of several fat straps with an inappropriate tool before I was happy that my lovely bag replete with tool roll and waterproofs would not slide about, flap annoyingly against the shock or disappear forever in my ‘burbling slipstream’. And I didn’t dare use the longest strap which is presumably designed to attach a bungalow to an elephant! And another thing. The detachable shoulder strap is generous enough in adjustment to accommodate hobbit or ent but even when folded tight with a stout elastic band really takes up too much precious pannier space. And you can’t leave it behind can you? Still when it was finally, firmly attached to the bike and I stood back to admire my new luggage I knew instantly that I must have another for the sake of symmetry if nothing else. Of course, in black the Classic Pannier is ‘out of stock’!
