Warm weather is coming any day now and with it the temptation to ditch the protective gear and hop on the bike in your t-shirt. Sadly, we're speaking from experience when we say the asphalt does not get more forgiving in Summer so we strongly encourage you not to take the risk. It's time to get vented.
If you want to ride in comfort this summer then you can't beat the airflow of a mesh motorcycle jacket. Every year we see more options in this product segment, so we picked our five favourites to make life a bit easier for you! Revit Eclipse Jacket
Let's start with what you could consider the best value for money as far as our Summer jackets go. The Revit Eclipse will only set you back £130 but rest assured Revit are not sacrificing anything in terms of quality.
Designed for hot weather riding, the Revit Eclipse is all about airflow. It is constructed from strong mesh on the chest, stomach, back and under the arms. The impact zones consist of a strong 600D polyester that will offer protection in case of a slide. Your elbows and shoulders are kept safe from impact by the included Knox Flexiform CE Level 1 armour and there is a pocket for an optional Seesoft back protector. This combination grants it a CE Level A safety certification.
The Eclipse is available for men and women and comes in a variety of different colours. Click below to see them all.
If you're looking for a jacket with a little more vintage flair, the Merlin Chigwell might be right up your alley. The Chigwell is very similar to the Revit Eclipse in terms of ventilation but uses Cotec waxed cotton abrasion-resistant fabric in the impact areas and has quilted shoulder panels to jazz things up a bit.
The Chigwell comes equipped with a full set (elbows, shoulders and back) of D3O armour and has an impressive CE Level AA safety rating.
Need a little bit more versatility from your summer jacket? Here's Merlin's second entry in our top 5: the Shenstone. The Shenstone is very similar to the Chigwell: it is made from the same materials, has a similar set-up when it comes to ventilation, comes with a complete set of D3O armour and is CE Level AA certified.
What sets it apart are the two chest pockets and the removable Reissa Active waterproof and breathable membrane that is zipped into the jacket, providing a barrier from wind and rain. An excellent addition because let's face it: summer might get hot, but it won't stay dry every day.
If we're talking about versatility, the Knox Urbane Pro couldn't be omitted from this list. For a few years now the Urbane Pro has been one of our bestsellers and is consistently praised in our customers' reviews.
This figure-hugging garment consists of strategically placed elastic and abrasion-resistant panels, with a super-tough arrow mesh allowing for a huge amount of air to flow through and keep you cool.
An included full set of flexible Knox Micro-lock armour sits in the right spots and is kept there due to the elastic nature of the jacket. This also means that it works very well as an underlayer, allowing you to wear any jumper, hoodie or jacket you want on top without sacrificing safety.
This year, Knox have upgraded the Urbane Pro and the newly released MKII achieves a CE Level AA safety rating, boasting levels of protection that surpass plenty of bulky leathers out there on the market. This new, more protective iteration is no less breathable or lightweight than the previous model, and that’s pretty impressive.
Lastly, we have the looker of the bunch. Leave it to Belstaff to design a jacket that truly combines functionality, protection and style. The Temple is perhaps the jacket in this line-up that looks least like an outright motorcycle jacket. It has less venting than the ones above but the mesh panels on the shoulders, arms and waist combined with the lightweight nature of the jacket will still make your hot weather rides a lot more comfortable.
The Temple is a CE Level A certified jacket and comes with super subtle D3O armour in the shoulders and elbows, with a pocket for an optional back protector. The Jacket is available in black, navy and green.
