AEDEICMA Milan 2011, the largest motorcycle show in Europe, is coming up fast so we thought it would be a good idea to review our finds from the 2010 show starting with Premier helmets.
Premier was founded in California in 1961 before production moved to Italy in 1987. Phil Read wore their helmets racing but in the last 15 years they haven't been on many people's radar. At EICMA they launched a new collection of carbon fibre and titanium helmets.
The open face Jet Vintage helmet jumped out at us since there isn't much choice if you are shopping for a retro style Jet helmet. Davida have had the market cornered for years but leather linings aren't for everyone and Ruby have popped up but are outside the price range of many. The Jet Vintage retails between £149.99 - £199.99 which for a carbon fibre helmet with removable interior and retractable visor struck us as incredible value for money. Once we persuaded a UK distributor to take them on the impact was immediate. 99% of people get on with the fit of the shell and are impressed with the low weight of 900 grammes. It has been our best selling open face helmet of the 2011 spring / summer season and we can't wait to see what new designs are on offer. We have just received our first shipment of Jet Vintage with visor studs so a fixed visor can be retro-fitted. We have requested a goggle retainer strap which is the one thing that lets it down.
We kitted out Charley Boorman for his latest adventure show, Extreme Frontiers, where he rides through Canada. He was really taken with the helmet so we were interested to see how it performed. On his return he was very pleased although he had tested it nearly to destruction in one incident!
Premier have a range of titanium helmets which we haven't had much feedback on yet, but will update this post when we do.
